MOTLEY, John Lothrop
(1814–1877)
   American diplomat and historian. Motley won fame with his voluminous studies on the his tory of the Dutch Republic, based on extensive archival research: The Rise of the Dutch Republic(1856), History of the United Nether lands (1860–1867), and Life and Death of John of Barneveld, Advo cate of Holland(1874). In 1872, he received an honorary doctoral de gree from Leiden University. See also HISTORIOGRAPHY.
